What Would Teddy have Said Back THEN?

President Bush has appointed John Bolton as US Ambassador to the Unityed Nations using a recess nomination.

Of course, Senator Ted Kennedy (D - Johnny Walker) was critical of the move.

"It's a devious maneuver that evades the constitutional requirement of Senate consent and only further darkens the cloud over Mr. Bolton's credibility at the U.N," Kennedy said."

As my good friend Vulture Six pointed out to me, The Senator's own brother used just such a manuover to put Thurgood Marshall on the SCOTUS bench.

But that's different, right, Ted Old Chap?

actually the marshall recess apt was used for a the 2nd district court. Once there, his record got him onto SCOTUS with little crying from the senate.

Ahh, those were different times then. The Dems owned the presidency and both houses of congress, but JFK couldn't get Marshall through the Senate because members in his own party were opposed, the so-called boll-weevil Southerners. Racists like Al Gore, Sr., Robert J. Byrd, and J William Fulbright, to name three. Now it's Senate Republicans who won't stand up and vote to do away the filibuster rule...
